At that time, a cross would have carried about the same meaning as a noose.

wouldn’t an electric chair be a closer match in meaning? nooses usually symbolize suicide moreso than execution these days

That depends where you are. In America it is more often associated with lynchings than suicide.

Edit: to add a little context from Wikipedia: Noose: Use in intimidation and hate-based racial politics - this is why I said “depends where you are”. I had no idea of these connotations before I moved to the US, either.

Janus with one a sounds like it might be a couple of countries south of me, we spell it Jaanus here in Estonia

So basically I’m suspecting eastern europe for their origin and over here we mostly don’t think about lynching very much. Execution by hanging was a thing but so long ago it’s nearly forgotten.

Not sure where you’re from, but in the U.S., at least, nooses have a specific historical and cultural meaning. It’s illegal to tie a noose with 13 or more coild in the u.s. for this reason, and it has nothing to do with suicide.

To be fair, lots of people were crucified at the time. Many with the same name as Jesus and many for the same crimes!

In this case, though… It was merely the pubic execution of a leprechaun.
