I subscribe to the …sublemmies (is there a better tern for this?) That are the main ones for subjects that interest me: Linux, privacy, …and others, I’m sure. But they’re very “high-level.” How do I find the “deep cuts?”

This but I’d go with one of the all/top sorts instead of all/new if you’re just searching for interesting communities. Personally I just use ‘all’ pretty much all the time
“Weighted” is also a very nice sort, that tends to lift up smaller comms.

Agreed. This thread yielded some good tips, but I continue to bump into a common reality, that many niche sublemmies simply don’t get much traffic.
The common term is “communities” or “comms”, I think.
I would try to look for servers dedicated to the subject you’re interested in and see what communities they have. Keep in mind that there are much fewer users on Lemmy than Reddit, so there might not be a specialized community for a given subject. And if there is, it might be very small/inactive.

Sometimes you have to grow your own community… a smaller user base requires much more individual participation.

I still say “subs” since you still subscribe to them. It’s just an easy, already-in-place word
Look at the “all” feed once in a while.
And filter by new.

Smaller niche communities people might like might not have the user outreach to make it out of the new filter.
This also gives smaller communities a chance to grow.
I don’t like seeing the same posts again and again.

Ahh-- that’s the program I use. This actually highlights my problem with federation*. It seems like there’s gotta be something between “customize everything” and “customize nothing.”
