This happened with my friend who booked a ski trip. They told him he had to cancel this trip. He went anyways and handed in his resignation.

Then they had to hire him as a contractor at a really high rate. True geniuses there.

First day of my honeymoon, wife and I are sitting down with a drink, my old boss called me and asked real nasty, “I just wanted to know if you were planning on coming in today.”

      Uh…no?

      Why not?

The ship I’m on is literally leaving port right now. I’m about to not even be in the country. I’m on my honeymoon?

So there’s no possible way for you to come in today?

Not unless you send a helicopter and come here on it to explain to my very angry wife why I’m not going to be here on our HONEYMOON…

Well I have you down as working here today. In the future, you’re supposed to inform us 2 weeks in advance before using your vacation time. You can’t just decide to not come in.

We discussed this in person 6 months ago. I gave you the required form myself at that time. You signed it and gave me a copy, which is sitting on my desk at home. I’ll see you in two weeks.

Alright and when you get back we can have a meeting about properly notifying supervisors when you intend to take long periods of time off…

God, what a miserable asshole she was.

Corporations are stupid. My dad got his job eliminated with a severance package after 25+years at a place that was moving plants, then hired at same company as a contractor at 50% raise for 8 more years (till he retired). Like the accounting math makes no sense

When put my vacation time in I always write “this is a notification, not a request” in the notes.

I have 100% called in sick from another state just as my friends and I were about to get on a gondola to go up to the top of a mountain.

I was on the phone saying I felt terrible when “NEXT CAR ARRIVING” or something similar blared over a loudspeaker.

“What was that?” they asked. “Oh, just the tv. fake cough

I’ve done similar prior to the days of company-issued phones and company messaging platforms. These days, calling in sick is just a teams/slack/whatever message to my lead; no need to sound sick anymore!

Once I submitted a leave request months in advance and it didn’t get signed until the day after I left. The day before when I was leaving the office they were making a big deal of the fact it wasn’t signed and I hit them with “it’d be nice if I still have a job when I come back” and left.

It’s not like I was going to cancel all of the booking because they didn’t do their job.

Sorry, as an executive of a major company I may have misheard you but did you say “replace half the team with an LLM and then make those remaining pick up the slack”?

LLMs don’t take vacation and tell me no.

They don’t do their job effectively, but they don’t say no!

A colleague is leaving the job at the end of the month and our vacation booking system said she had 16 vacation days left, so she booked those at the end of the month, her supervisor approved, she handed over all her tasks, returned the hardware and everything, and thought she was done working here.

On her first day off, the supervisor calls her to let her know that she can’t actually take that many vacation days. Because she quit in the first quarter of the year, she only gets a quarter of the vacation days for the year, which the vacation booking system did not account for and well, the supervisor had not noticed while approving either.

Like, it’s kind of just how the contract and laws and everything works. I don’t know, if the supervisor offered to convert it to unpaid leave, but that’s kind of the only real thing, they could’ve done here. But yeah, still just such a dumb situation after all…

These managers must never buy airplane tickets with their own money. I don’t know which days I’m flying until I see the prices, and then I need to buy the tickets immediately to lock in those prices and seats.

Even if I were to ask permission (which I’m not), it would have to be for a general range, not specific days.

It’s tough to say definitively because there are a bunch of dialects, but in mine (west coast USA), “on another continent” is correct and “in another continent” sounds a little off.

In Australia, it’s the opposite. I read “in another continent” the same way I read “in another country”. i.e. within the borders of another country/continent. I don’t hear people talking about being on another continent/country.

Language is both bullshit and fascinating 😁

I think it depends on how intimate you’re getting with said continent. Wink wink nudge nudge.

that’s some bullshit English has, come on, for fucks sake, it’s the same thing!!!

I’m standing on a continent, but also in it’s boundaries. English as a language has a lot of BS, and this shit is hard for people’s who learned English as a second language.
