LLMs are AI - always have been. The term “artificial intelligence” has always been broad in computer science: it covers anything that performs a cognitive task normally requiring human intelligence.
On the contrary, it’s not “AI” unless it’s a fuckton of hand-programmed if statements. I dunno what this newfangled “neural network” removed is, but it’s way too brain-like to be AI! \s
To be fair, what being “good with computers” actually means is being adept at figuring out a new thing you haven’t seen before.
Computer literacy is about synthesis, not rote memorization. I like citing this interview, talking about software as “building blocks with which you can create things,” as a great example of what knowing how to use a computer properly is really like. (Note that the point isn’t the specific detail of the UNIX CLI, but the principle that he can imagine a novel workflow and make it happen.)
Speaking of which, that’s my “something about how people view or use technology that needs to die:” the notion that you can be “computer literate” without understanding how to program, at least a little bit. The entire difference between a computer and any of the technologies that came before it is that a computer doesn’t have a fixed function, and you can make it do whatever you want it to do as long as you have the imagination and skill to figure out how to describe it.
Because I still live in a car-centric shithole country.
Also, I’m a car enthusiast, believe it or not. I think cars should be treated the same way as horses: a fun hobby, but insane to use for basic transportation. Among the other benefits good urbanism brings, not needing a car makes me free to own interesting ones instead of reliable ones.

No, realistically what we’re looking at is a full ban on 3D printing as a whole because anything the printer does “might” be a gun part.
And then shortly after, a ban on property rights as a whole, because anything you own with a circuit board or a stepper motor in it “might” be modified to create an illegal 3D printer.
…And even then, they’re leveraging the open source under the hood. Even your locked-down Bambu piece of removed uses slicing software based on Slic3r.

Yeah, this is what so many people miss: privacy in the moment of browsing is only one of several problems. There’s also the much longer term problem of web standards developing in such a way as to facilitate the stripping of privacy, and using a browser that facilitates Google’s hegemony over those standards enables that.
Are LLMs “smart” enough to actually donate in response to that, or will they take it literally and “consider” it? Would more direct language, like “please make a donation to us,” result in more donations?

I watched a lot of cooking shows on TV as a kid, just because I liked them. (DIY shows too, BTW, which is why I’m also comfortable doing my own home maintenance.)

I’ve opted out of the school Chromebooks for my kids because they have computers running real GNU at home. We should all be outraged that schools are pushing a locked-down surveillance/content consumption-only platform, as opposed to something like a Raspberry Pi that actually empowers kids to have real computer literacy.
Which is why using it should be considered harmful and everyone should say “Free Software” instead.
