I suspect one of the stumbling blocks will be liability. Software generally needs updates to stay ahead of new cybersecurity threats as they’re discovered. Any proposal for releasing serverside code (so that people have the option to continue to run servers themselves if they want to continue playing a heavily online-focused game) will need to address how to limit a developer’s legal liability from such a release.

Let’s say Blizzard discontinues WOW, and I, as a player, obtain serverside code from them to run my own server for myself and my friends. Now, let’s say that some hacker group discovers a new exploit that is unpatched on my WOW server, because no patch exists, because the serverside code is abandoned by Blizzard and provided to me “as is”. Do I have any legal avenue to sue Blizzard for whatever damage is caused? Because that question contains a lot of grey areas and “it depends on whether…” caveats. Which is by no means an insurmountable problem to solve, but the question does need to be asked, and both sides will have valid arguments in both directions.

The question of “what burden of legal responsibility will the developer continue to bear as a result of providing server code which continues to be used long after they’ve stopped maintaining it” will need to be clarified.

Wasn’t the “I worked at Blizzard” guy (can’t think of their name right now) one of the most public people against Stop Killing Games?

Wonder what they have to say about all this now?

PirateSoftware. He’s become persona non-grata on the internet. Not because of him going against Stop Killing Games specifically but he’s basically irrelevant now.

Well, I think was the straw that broke the camels back. If it wasnt for this on whichever next controversy he’d have gotten shot (metaphorically)

oh i’ve never watched anything directly by him except his animal well playthrough, where he spends a lot of time “thinking” by looking down at his desk

I never did either, I just retroactively followed his WoW drama (after his SKG takes) while playing Motor Town.

The context from the quote (“Do you see my mana? What am I supposed to do for you?”) is that he was playing hardcore WoW with other youtubers and streamers, he got a lil’ afraid and ran away like a rat while pretending to help his team’s escape: he spammed sub-optimal spells, intentionally draining his mana, leading to the quote.

I originally saw the guys cyber security shorts, and those just felt so off, like it was a semester 1 CS student spouting what they just learnt to seem like an SME.

Then much later on I came across him again when I saw that Hardcore WoW drama unfold. Instantly knew I was right when I originally thought something was off about him, felt so validating haha
