DLSS - a solution devised by moronic suits to solve a problem other moronic suits created.

I miss when video games were made so we could experience the vision of the developers. I also miss when the games made were optimized (at least somewhat) for the user experience and not cranked out sloppily for investors.

If they don’t stop digging this slop hole any deeper, I won’t be coming back.

Heck my 7900xtx is serving me plenty well and my Ryzen processor is doing more than enough.

Seeing how my old lower specced pc lasted me 11 years I figure this one might be able to chug along for a few more at this point.

However, they continually lend their money to their biggest customers, none of whom have managed to use that stuff to make a dime yet, so their chances of actually getting their money back, which is rivaling the GDP of many countries at this point, are just about zero.

Forgive me in saying this, but this whole discussion has gotten way out of proportion. It’s been a while since I’ve seen that many death threats left and right. But that’s the internet nowadays. Tiresome.

It’s just a bunch of dumbasses in here downvoting anything that even mentions AI. It’s been like this in pretty much every single thread.
Haven’t seen a single one of them actually try to have a discussion about the technology and they’re all too stupid to realize this is still in development and will continue to improve. Same with the whole circle jerk about the graphics cards, so what if it currently runs on two 5090 cards? It’s not like that card is the last one we are ever going to get.

I wonder how much power two 5090s would draw?🤔

Energy bill through the roof I guess.

My desktop with a 3080 draws more than my homelab R740s even the one with a Quadro. Two 5090s would probably use more than the whole rack.

Yeah that, other DLSS version was used to boost framerate. If people want pixel clarity for flex they’d run at 4k native. If this is mainly for altering visual, might as well market this as a separate product, like their corporate version of ReShade or something.

In fact, I vaguely remember they have something like that already. Around Battlefield V (2018) release I remember Nvidia had a tool to alter the games rendering settings deeper than the game itself allows, like lowering the LOD way lower in quality making it easier to see enemies, etc. DLSS5 could’ve been part of this thing.

I think the straw man claim was that it’s AI slop, and Huang said we’re wring, because AI is deeply integrated into the rendering pipeline.

I don’t know how nuanced the definition of “AI slop” is these days, but to me, it seems to refer to any content generated by AI directly for consumption. If that’s the definition you’re using, then this product does produce AI slop, because the art is materially altered from what the game’s art direction put in there, as can clearly be seen in the example side by side image comparisons. The differences clearly exceed simple lighting and texture changes, and the lighting it does alter does not appear to adhere to the same light source as the unaltered images, creating more detail at the expense of accuracy to the original content. It is the difference between “make me an image clearer than this” vs. “make this image clearer”.

I agree with you, this is an AI slop filter, but the main critique I’ve seen was about it changing the piece of art to something the artist didn’t intend (kind of the second half of your reply), that’s why I said he argues against a straw man.

Sorry, I misunderstood your comment and thought you were suggesting that Huang thought arguments against his point were the straw man argument, which doesn’t seem to be the case to me.

Huang seems to be suggesting that since the AI work is happening further down in the rendering pipeline, rather than reskinning it after rendering, makes it not count as AI slop, which is ridiculous.

If I am cooking a recipe to make something, it doesn’t matter if the recipe calls for adding shit to the top or if I just pour some shit on after it is cooked. It still has shit all over it.

Yeah but social media backlash isn’t the tangible way of determining what customers think. If customers still shell out the money for these things (seems they will) then customers are providing approval of this shit in the only way that actually matters.

It is not, but prohibitive pricing causes potential customers to be more considered in their buying decisions. If I’m looking at graphics cards, and one costs triple the other for AI reasons, some will have the decision made for them by their wallet, and others will decide the AI stuff is not worth more than the whole rest of the PC, leaving only the whales with more money than sense.

Catering only to whales may work for businesses making microtransaction games, because there is no limit to how much a whale might spend there, but no matter how rich a customer is, he only wants one graphics card for his PC, maybe 2.

I think, the problem is that Nvidia has two customer groups. Those that buy their products and those that buy their stock options. Nvidia can produce garbage that completely misses the point of real-world usage, so long as they can convince investors that other investors will join the pyramid scheme. And for that, it just has to look like impressive tech, not actually good or artistically meaningful.

There‘s also the concept of swarm intelligence in that a lot of people can beat for example a chess grandmaster by democratically voting for each move. This isn‘t super consistent but it happens. Of course tech CEOs claim AI is exactly that but it isn‘t. It doesn‘t make choices like a thousand people in a chess match do. It just rolls a dice and then does some math.

What I‘m trying to say is if 99% of potential costumers says it‘s crap, then it‘s a really really tough sell. To put it mildly. And the backlash from DLSS5 has been huge across the internet.

The wisdom of crowds is a real thing, but, it only applies when people are making decisions independently of each other. That is decidedly not the case when we are talking about an social media pile on about something.

Man, what a nightmare hellscape. And whether you use the service or can’t even afford a graphics card that can do any of this, you’re gonna pay for it as it incentivises developers to focus less on graphics because they’re just gonna be smeared in generative slop anyway.

Its getting harder to avoid dodging these fuckass companies, but I’m not supporting this shit anymore.

I think this might be a self-solving problem. Because the barriers to publishing software are practically nonexistent anymore, gaming companies cannot corner the market like you see in other industries.

People that don’t mind cutting corners, and those that have little taste and have seen every Friends episode 20 times, will still pay top dollar for the slop because they are easily marketed to, but there will always be people refusing that path that make things with the intention of the customer liking them instead of the shareholders. The businesses doing things this way will find a lively marketplace untapped by the AAA studios that can’t stay out of their own way.

If it continues as it has, the gulf between quality and slop will continue to widen, and these slop games will be consumed by the same people that think Arby’s Steak Nuggets are food, while the rest of us enjoy quality content actually made by someone.

For me the silver lining is that only devs who are absolute hacks and produce overpriced crap would use this. I don‘t buy their games now and I won‘t buy their slop tomorrow. Personally I don‘t think it will be hard to dodge this for a very, very long time. The hardware to run this is unaffordable and development cycles are huge. This tech could be retro before I have to actually start maneuvering around it.
